Enjoying Christmas music

Christmas holly on top of musical notesWhat sort of Christmas music do you like?

I think of three, or maybe four, categories of Christmas music…

Rocking Christmas songs

A few days ago, Pitchfork put out a list of their top 50 Christmas songs ever which is really interesting as they give stories and information about the songs, too. There are certainly songs on there I don’t know so I may have to start checking out rock Christmas songs this year!

Santa hat on a muscial note Who knew Sufjan Stevens has released more than 100 Christmas songs since 2001, for instance?

Or that Frank Sinatra sang three different versions of “have yourself a Merry little Christmas“?

Or that Chuck Berry also sang a Rudolph song written by Johnny Marks (who wrote the original Rudolph the red nosed reindeer)? It was called Run Rudolph Run.

Christmas carols

Carolling isn’t a big deal in Australia but we certainly learn carols at school and enjoy Carols by Candlelight in various parks. And there is something special about being together, singing fun songs and listening to a combined voice.

There are traditional carols, fun (children’s) carols and even local variants of carols (such as an Aussie 12 days of Christmas). Some evoke an emotional feel while others bring a smile (like Santa kissing Mummy last night).

So what is your favourite Christmas carol? If that questions is too hard – what is your favourite type of carol?

Where do you like to sing Christmas carols?

Favourite Christmas songs

What are your favourite Christmas songs (not carols)? How often do you listen to them (by choice rather than when walking through a shopping centre!)?

Some of the songs I can think of are:

6 White Boomers by Rolf Harris

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus

12 days of Christmas

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (so well known I think it is almost counted in amongst the carols, but I don’t think it really fits there)

Making a child happy!

We have some good friends who have a 2 year old son. His was the first Christmas present we bought this year – we saw it months ago and grabbed it on the spot for him.

On the weekend, we saw our friends and gave their son his gift. It was a little barn (made out of fabric like a small tent) with 8 soft animals (4 pairs of mother and baby). He wasn’t overly excited when it opened and I set up the barn for him, but he then played with his animals happily.

We all left together to go to carols by candlelight – and the barn came with us. One determined two year would not let go of his barn in the car or walking from the car to the park where we had carols, and likewise to go back to the car! He did put it down to run around the park and eat a doughnut, but we got the message that he loved his new barn and animals.

That is the sort of reaction we love when giving a present!
